Toothbits, their ingredients & benefits

There are always a few doubts when switching to a natural brand with basically anything. There are always questions you ask yourself when considering a switch. Will this natural brand offer what my current brand of choice is offering and more? Will the product do what I need it to do? What are the benefits of switching to a natural brand? As mainly a natural toothpaste company, we get a fair amount of questions about our ingredients and what their benefits are so we decided to dedicate a blog post targeted at these questions. Basically, this blog post is just a list of our ingredients and their purpose in our bits, just to help customers make a more informed decision when switching to our toothbits.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that we use in our bits, not only to give our bits a sweeter taste but also to repel cavity-causing bacteria. The consumption of xylitol has been found to reduce tooth decay as well as gum disease, it also slows down the growth of bacteria on tooth surfaces, stops the production of tooth-decay causing acid, and neutralises the PH level in saliva and plaque. Xylitol also enables some rebuilding of the enamel, therefore helping prevent new cavities from forming.

Erythritol is also a natural sweetener that adds to the sweetness of our bits, however, it still adds benefits with regards to reducing the weight of dental plaque as well as reducing the risk of dental caries. Erythritol also suppresses oral bacteria growth that forms on the biofilm of your teeth that eventually leads to tooth decay.

Sodium Bicarbonate:

Sodium Bicarbonate or better known as baking soda is used in our bits to assist in balancing the PH-levels in your mouth. This helps fight bad breath that may be caused by foods that cause fluctuation in the acidity of your mouth. It can also help improve the whiteness of your teeth as well as prevent tooth decay from occurring.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate:

Ever wondered what makes our bits foam the way they do? Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a natural ingredient derived from coconuts, more specifically coconut oil. Sodium cocoyl isethionate is great to add to water-free products and is therefore used to create the cleaning foam our bits make when brushing.

Spearmint oil not only leaves your mouth minty fresh but it also has natural anti-inflammatory properties as well as anti-bacterial properties helping to control the growth of bacteria in your mouth. The vitamins and minerals found in mint also work as a defense mechanism for the enamel and helps strengthen teeth and gums. It also acts as an alkaline food that helps balance an acidic environment in the mouth that can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

Activated Charcoal:

There are many different benefits of using activated charcoal for various reasons but we use activated charcoal in our bits as it allows for natural tooth-whitening by fighting plaque and other teeth-staining compounds. Activated charcoal also has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. We use it in our activated charcoal bits as a detoxifying agent.

Bentonite is used in our bits to absorb toxins as well as to neutralise bad bacteria, by binding to heavy metals and toxins around the teeth and gums. Bentonite also provides an array of minerals that are good for remineralising your teeth. Bentonite also has an alkalising effect which is beneficial for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, as many foods we eat can create an acidic environment in our mouths.

Dicalcium Phosphate:

Calcium plays an important roll in the strength of teeth and bones, however, Calcium requires Phosphorus to actually maximise its bone-strengthening abilities and benefits. Dicalcium phosphate is a salt we use in our bits as an abrasive agent which is similar to the building blocks of your teeth. It is an important ingredient for building strong jawbones and teeth especially in children’s teeth which require adequate calcium and phosphorus to form a hard and strong structure during growth.
